Can You Watch Dragon Ball Z Without Watching Dragon Ball

Avatar image for scottjay01

I noticed online a people wanting to know more in full general nearly the story and were to showtime with the series since FighterZ was released.

So as someone that has seen this show almost commencement to finish in 5 different languages,

I thought I'd make a topic here on this.

  • Best way to consume the series ?

I volition always say the absolute all-time style is to watch the Anime of DB & DBZ in the original Japanese it has a superb bandage that's lovable and fun while hitting the shows dramatic tones to a T after on. At that place are as well plot elements, character motivations, foreboding and nuances that are totally missed in the English dub in the original (See dragonball kai below).

If you have the time I would totally recommend it in Japanese, its fantastic.

The Testify is available on Blu-ray, DVD and streaming via www.funimation.com

Can I start with Dragonball Z?

Yes DBZ is a very easy jumping on bespeak as information technology takes identify 5 years subsequently DB and you lot can always go back to check out things your curious about later. I volition make a suggestion which is to perhaps sentry the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai which is the last Arc of Dragonball before starting DBZ, you get a little more than backstory on Goku, Piccolo, & the gang and see probably the best fight in the whole serial.

  • Dragon ball Kai:
If you don't want to picket information technology in Japanese then Dragonball Kai is for y'all, while non perfect the English dub is leagues ameliorate than it was during the initial US run of DBZ, Aye it does lose a trivial build up and some grapheme development due to its shorter length merely it is the best Dragonball in English dubbed, Solid work past the American bandage. Side note I didn't recollect I'd accept to mention that it is in Japanese likewise simply seeing as replies on hither have mentioned it. Here's Why KAI in Japanese is not recommended, The Cast is allot older at present and some lines don't pack the same punch, as well some of the bandage passed abroad and were replaced as well as the Music past Kenji Yamamoto has been replaced past most reissues of the Blu-rays/DVDS due to the music scandal. If you want to sentinel DBZ in Japanese I'd reccomend the original series over kai, Fantastic VO, Slap-up music placement, more character development and you can just skip the episodes that you wish to to speed it forth if y'all must.

The Evidence is available on Blu-ray, DVD and streaming via www.funimation.com

  • The Manga:

You lot know instead of watching DB/DBZ a bang-up way to swallow the serial if yous are low on fourth dimension is the Manga, Its very easy to consume in Paperback or Online through VIZ.

The Manga is where information technology all started and really to this 24-hour interval holds ups merely equally practiced every bit when first released.

  • Dragonball Super?

Dragonball Super takes place subsequently DBZ its currently almost to wrap up for the time existence in Japan and is airing the serial fourth Arc in the US on Toonami. Seems like Dragonall Z Kai or the fandub DBZ Abridged are the best ways to get into Dragonball these days.

If y'all tin can find a place that legally streams Kai, that is, I've never seen it available anywhere except on Blu Ray. Or good old TV.

Avatar image for s-a-n-jr

People looking to become into the show and want to see information technology in English language, don't watch the original DBZ dub. I tin can't stress this enough. Watch Kai, information technology's the filler-less, better edited and better English dub version of the show.

When they dubbed the testify for Cartoon Network in the mid-90s, anime in the w was still relatively new. As the show was aimed for kids, the English language benefactor (Funimation) was told to dumb down dialogue, slow down speech etc so kids would understand what was going on (considering plain American kids are stupid?). With Kai, they had no such limitations, so the script is closer to the original Japanese and the dialogue is snappier. Also, the actors improved in the years since they first dubbed it.

Hither's an example:

Showtime scene is the old dub, second is Kai.

Avatar image for 49th

Dragonball Z is the only anime where the dubs are better than subs. I tin can't stand high-pitched Goku.

Avatar image for oursin_360

I thought kai had a sub release to?

I liked the original dub(before funimation took over) thr best but i heard information technology also got real bad in the terminate. I believe it was done by a Canadian company.

Avatar image for scottjay01

@oursin_360: Yeah at that place is a sub release of Kai merely the Japanese one is not every bit good as the Original series, basically the English dub needed kai allot more than due to their horrible dub and terrible script. The Japanese Kai is missing some of the original cast due to them passing abroad and a damaged musical score (to save time explaining)

Yeah original funimation dub just got it all incorrect for the most function the new score was nice in places but dialogue was such a mess. A pocket-sized example is on their style to the fight the Androids in the Japanese Piccolo says he has a terrible foreboding something he cant quite put his finger on, he's certain he can beat out the androids but its something else, much later when at the scout Kami is having the same affair and you find out they were both sensing Cell information technology was a dandy trivial seed planted . This is basically not real in the English dub.

I dunno if I'd depict the stuff that gets lost in Kai as "build" or "grapheme development."

I love Goku fighting the mafia and Piccolo learning how to drive as much as anyone, but the Garlic Jr. saga, Fake Namek, the 20 episode five minutes to Namek's destruction are flat-out atrocious.

Cannot recommend Kai highly enough for the fantastic script, acting, and pacing.

Oh God... Yea, DB feels pretty consistently strong until somewhere around Blue which is when I start doing the DBZ "let's just skip around to the best moments" thing. I've never seen DBZ Kai, though. I should cheque information technology out.

Avatar image for deactivated-61665c8292280

I demand to go effectually to lookout man Kai in total. Simply every fourth dimension I attempt to I just miss the original's music so very much. On top of that, I never really minded the longer pace of the offset english dub.

Avatar image for xel

I'd say watching Dragon Brawl before DBZ is a must. I'd besides recommend that it's watched in Japanese with subs, but if you decide to watch Kai instead of DBZ, then watch Kai dubbed.

In brusk DB to DBZ in Japanese, or DB to DBKai in English language. Battle of Gods and Resurrection F can exist enjoyed either way; I personally preferred them dubbed in English.

Avatar image for chaser324

I've just started watching Kai, and it does seem like a skillful expedient style to enjoy the story of DBZ. In that location's certainly some gaps, but it hits the high points and clearly tells the main story without getting bogged downward. The only truly bad part is that the intro/outro music is incredibly lame.

Avatar image for zevvion

Judge I am in the minority (only 1 even?) in this thread, but I remember Kai isn't expert. Yes, the dub is a trivial bit better, but what is claimed to be a positive aspect described as 'less filler' is really only removing character development from the series. I couldn't stand up the things they skipped or glossed over. Furthermore, the DBZ soundtrack is miles, no, leagues, no, galaxies beyond what the Kai soundtrack is. Kai makes it sound like a teaparty. Z had ballsy soundtracks during fights, leading up to fights, during transformations. Losing the music is half of what DBZ is.

Avatar image for alkusanagi

Watch Abridged, especially since that'due south the characterization that Super uses instead of Z.

Avatar image for solh0und

Dragonball Z is the only anime where the dubs are better than subs. I tin can't stand high-pitched Goku.

Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop are pretty skillful dubs themselves compared to their sub counterparts.

Avatar image for nicksmi56

Super ratcheted up Goku's stupidity to such an insane caste that I'k not actually sure if you're joking or non.

Avatar image for miceman64

If y'all want to watch DB it is highly recommended that you start with DB and so motility on to DBZ. Besides avoid the DUB like a plague information technology was horribly acted and highly inaccurate when compared with the source material and they replaced the orchestral music with terrible synth 16 bit sounding obnoxiousness that never stops fifty-fifty in scenes that are supposed to be quite. The problems with the original Funimation dub are too numerous to even count. If you want to experience DB like it was intended to be seen only stick with the Japanese version.

Kai has a pretty good dub but it is a pretty lousy remastering and recut of DBZ and since information technology does not encompass DB it is not recommended. If you can't stand up the filler just pull up a filler list online and skip those episodes or read the manga. The Manga viz translation is pretty solid and nowhere about as bad every bit the DB and DBZ dub.

Aside from that DB and DBZ were originally made with a 4:3 attribute ratio in listen so if you run across annihilation that is in 16:9 that means the prototype is cropped and you are losing 20% of the show. So make sure it's in 4:3 and not in 16:nine.

Avatar image for hamst3r

For nonetheless another two cents on this topic:

I suggest watching Dragon Ball, then DBZ (not Kai), then Dragon Ball Super. English Dub. Specifically the versions that are on Funimation.com, which take the original Japanese soundtrack. I don't retrieve the iv:three original vs. 16:9 ingather and zoom deviation matters at all for this show.

Also, I suggest rampage watching if you tin can and non skipping annihilation you lot've heard is filler. Do skip the intro and outro after the kickoff mind, unless you really desire to hear the same song for 100 to 200 episodes. There's over 16 hours of credits in DBZ alone. Exercise skip the recaps, considering once they start happening they merely become longer.

Oh and if y'all want to fit some of the movies in at that place, I found these ones to be the most enjoyable: DBZ movie 01, 02, 05, 06, 07, 08, 12, xiii, 14, and fifteen. As well as the Bardock, The Father of Goku special and the History of Trunks special.

Avatar image for arbitrarywater

I can't imagine going through regular 400+ episode DBZ at this betoken in time. I'thousand non confronting long-ass shounen stuff, simply the way of padding it exemplifies drives me a picayune nuts, even if I'yard sure there are worse, more contempo examples people tin can probably bespeak to. It's kinda unfortunate that DBZ Kai has some weird caveats attached to it, because if I was going to watch myself some Dragon Ball Z in the yr of our lord 2018, that's the way I'd practise it.

Or, yous know, I'd re-spotter DBZ Abridged, which is honestly the version of things I recollect at this point.

Avatar image for miceman64

@hamst3r: The aspect ratio does matter because all the xvi:nine sources aside from being cropped have horrendous epitome quality.

Avatar image for zombiepie

As long as we tin can all concord Dragon Ball GT isn't canon, you lot cannot go wrong with this guide.

Avatar image for nicksmi56

My own two cents on this contend:

If I had to choose betwixt the two DBZs, I'd have to go with Kai.

I grew upwardly with DBZ, but that padding is painful. There'southward literally a betoken at the end of the Goku and Freiza fight where Frieza has a flashback of pretty much the entire fight up to that point. Information technology's laughable. And the filler isn't exactly something I'd say anyone HAS to see. I mean, one of the filler fights is resolved considering Goku suddenly remembers he can do one of his signature moves. DBZ writing has never been anything deep, simply come up on.

DBZ Kai is DBZ paced how nearly of u.s.a. remember it: moving from one fight to the side by side. It'south quick, much more watchable and information technology looks prettier to boot. There's a reason all the media that retells the story tends to do it the manga/Kai way.

Avatar image for holyxion

As someone who's always wanted to sentinel more DBZ, simply tin't stand drawn-out filler, I can definitely 2nd the manga recommendation for people who don't have time to watch every single episode. The original manga is technically closer to Toriyama'south original ideas and actually shows off his drawing way in the medium that fabricated him then popular in the first place. Equally an bated, if you lot similar original Dragon Brawl and want something a lilliputian less activeness-focused, his first manga Dr. Slump is a highly fun and charming series likewise.

I other thing to mention is that, while the currently running Dragon Ball Super manga is quite well done, and Toriyama is closely involved in storyboarding and all that, information technology'south drawn past someone else and is extremely accelerated relative to the bear witness. Information technology'southward even so skillful if you don't have time for the ~130 episodes of the DBS anime, just you lot'll definitely miss out on some of the plot points of the show that simply sort of get glossed over.

Avatar image for oursin_360

The manga is real skillful, i came up in a fourth dimension where dbz was stuck on the ginyu saga for years and internet was a slog with no manner to get the sub and so i actually read the dbz portion of the manga starting time. Its honestly a quick read, merely if you are not used to black and white(and peradventure reversed reading direction) it takes some getting used to but i would recommend information technology. I just read scanlations when i was similar 16 then the actual manga is probably way better.

Avatar image for chaser324

Dan and Jeff are going to give information technology a endeavour. I guess we'll see how information technology goes, but I don't have high hopes that this is going to change their listen on anime.

Cracking guide, but I would similar to add together a couple of things:

The arc-guide is missing some arcs on Dragon Ball Z, such every bit:

Cell Arc: (later on android arc) later on defeating the machines, the gang discover a new monstrosity with origins related to the androids but more than powerful than anything they ever encountered before. After encountering the gang of heroes, this new enemy gets curious nearly the ability of the saiyans and challenges them for a martial arts tournament that could decide the fate of the globe.

Other-World Arc: (after cell arc) Completely filler and removed from DB Kai we learn more about the other-world and it'south gods. Another martial arts tournament happens.

Dandy Saiyaman Arc: (afterwards other-earth arc) The kids have grown upward and now a 17 year one-time Gohan decides to use his Saiyan powers to help protect the metropolis. Condign a masked super-hero, he has to notice a balance between his new secret identity and his personal life in school. (this is one of my favorite arcs, it'due south similar the Dragon Ball version of Spider-Man)

-

Regarding Kai, I definitely think it'southward currently the all-time style to watch Dragon Brawl Z but information technology should exist pointed out that one of the big changes that no one is mentioning was the removal of claret and reduced number of wounds or scratches. Overall it feels much less violent than the original Dragon Ball Z did.

Dragon Ball Kai also removed one of the favorite filler scenes for many Dragon Brawl fans: when Goku and Piccolo have to have a driver'due south license. Here's some clips from it:

Except for the Portuguese dub, which non just is the near amateur-sounding dub ever, it has also most of it ad-libed based on a French script that was poorly translated from Japanese. It'south similar the Dragon Ball Abridged fan dub only fabricated well-nigh 20 years before. Just like anybody else here in Portugal I take tons of nostalgia for this dub, only I can't deny how absurd it actually is.

I think its a bad thought. A generally outdated feeling shonen anime isnt gonna become anyone attached who isnt a teenager.

I dont meant that as a knock on all shonen anime of form. Ane Piece is the just manga I read and I retrieve its amazing but DBZ is almot similar a prototype for better more interesting shows. There are sure small moments to love but a lot of those are gonna be breezed over in kai. I can run across dan never taking off the shrinkwrap for those other ii season DVDs

After loving DBZ in the late ninety's this prompted me to scout some of the show back again and Kai seemed like the perfect way to practice it. Unfortunately the only fashion Kai is available in Australia is via absurdley priced DVD's and Blu-Ray. Seeing this I figured I'd give the original a try which is bachelor through streaming merely it does feel actually desperately paced then I'one thousand non sure If I'll stick with it.

I recently rewatched the DBZ Funimation dub in total. I didn't mind the filler, because I rampage-watched information technology during a long break and it wasn't like a Boob tube network was using the filler to deny me my Dragonball fix for an unabridged week like when I watched it as a kid. (Though that was nowhere near as bad as resetting to the Saiyan saga every then oft. I'g and then glad the '90s are behind us.) I retrieve the only filler that bothered me was Garlic Jr, because it was long and terrible. Oh, and in hindsight I call back nigh of the mid-to-late Majin saga was pretty bad and skippable -- probably the only stuff I like after say, episode 237, is the Supreme Kai stuff. Only at that place's no satisfying identify to bail out really, and then eh.

I haven't seen much of Kai (the music turned me off immediately, DBZ actually needs the iconic Funimation recap/episode title music at the least), but I saw a scrap of the Saiyaman arc in Kai, and idea the dialogue in that arc was really disjointed and bad compared to the Funimation dub. It'due south probably unfair to judge Kai in its entirety based solely upon an arc that I'g probably manner more into than most (I really similar Videl before they ruined her, okay?), but it was certainly another point against Kai for me.

Re: the Japanese vocalization acting: any of you crazy purists trying to push this over the English vox acting are going to accept to accept that the Dragon Ball zeitgeist is inseparable from the English voices, "stone the dragon", etc.

Cell Arc: (afterward android arc) afterward defeating the machines, the gang discover a new monstrosity with origins related to the androids only more powerful than anything they ever encountered before. Later on encountering the gang of heroes, this new enemy gets curious almost the ability of the saiyans and challenges them for a martial arts tournament that could decide the fate of the world.

Uh, is your retentiveness working okay for you? Because I don't think this is what happens.

Can someone confirm something for me, please?

Is there anywhere to legally stream Dragonball Z Kai dubbed in the US? I know that you tin buy them on Amazon, only if I'm going to pay that much I'm going to buy the actual flavor on Blu-Ray. I know that I could get a Funimation sub and watch Dragonball Z with all the filler and such, but really I'd rather the watch the version that moves at a stride resembling something reasonable. The original series has 291 episodes; Kai has 167. That's a fiddling besides shut to "half-filler" for me. On Funimation's folio for DBZ Kai, there'southward a push that says "Add to Queue", but information technology doesn't listing any bachelor episodes so I'm not sure which queue it's talking about.

Avatar image for oursin_360

@justin258: you tin can look upward a filler listing and simply skip all those episodes.

Another thing i recall about kai (but mayhap it was changed or stock-still), in making it "hd" they concluded upwardly having a weird attribute ratio or something didn't they? I vaguely remember that existence an effect people had.

DBZ was popular everywhere without the outdated crap soundtrack Funimation decided to commodities on to the show like it was a tumor and having a script that is possibly 50% accurate. The affair is DBZ would have been just as pop in the US with the original music as well and there is already evidence of this since they were airing the original three DBZ movies at the time on TV with the original score and a much more true-blue script and nobody complained. So no i reject your notion entirely. Funimation made all the wrong decision back then and in that location is a reason that outdated business organization practice of changing a product so much that it'southward barely recognizable from what it's supposed to be, is not used today.

But the English Dragon Brawl Z dub used the Faulconer score, and even then they only use it from partway through the Freeza arc to the end of Z, the Saiyan and early Freeza stuff and movies all use different composers.

I have to add to the faction that doesn't intendance for the Japanese audio runway(besides the head cha la song). I detest all the music in the games as well, it doesn't capture the feel of the prove at all IMO. I think they went overboard with the bar metal fot a minute but the original dbz funimation theme is unironically my favorite. Its in my caput to this day.
